Garcia Lorca Centre opens its doors in Granada

 Federico Garcia Lorca Centre in Granada was inaugurated on 29 July. The building, whose equipment and cultural activities have been funded by the EEA Grants, is devoted to the conservation, care, and study of the Federico García Lorca’s work.

In an official opening with the presence of Spanish Government officials, Norwegian Embassy representatives and local authorities, Federico Garcia Lorca Centre opened its doors to the public on 29 July. A cultural space, whose equipment and cultural activities have received 4 million euros from the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism (EEA Grants), and which aspires to become a contemporary culture model.

Spanish General Director of Community Funds, José María Piñero, pointed out the excellent results of the EEA Grants in Spain, and stood up for “the promotion of cultural heritage as a key element of European cohesion and of greater economy dynamism”. Minister Counsellor of the Norwegian Embassy, Lars Andersen, expressed confidence that the García Lorca Centre could be used as a “cooperation bridge” between Norway and Spain.

General Director of Cultural Industries, Teresa Lizaranzu, highlighted the “long journey” until the official opening and the “joint efforts” developed by all the institutions in the Consortium. Andalucía's cultural counsellor, Rosa Aguilar, stressed that the objective of the García Lorca Centre is not only the promotion of his work but also the “myriad of works” inspired by his legacy. The president of the Provincial Government, José Entrena, considers 29 July “a historical day” and Granada Mayor, José Torres Hurtado, expressed confidence that the Lorca’s legacy will arrive at the Centre as soon as possible.

The opening marks the start of the scheduled educational and cultural activities. In September, the centre will host its first exhibition, about the building itself, and so on until the end of December 2015. Before the end of the year, it is also foreseen the relocation of the poet’s legacy from Madrid to Granada.

With a total surface area of 4,700 m², the Centre consists of the following facilities: and exhibition room, a 500 m² space that will harbour all kinds of exhibitions; a theatre with a capacity of 424 people equipped for different events; workshops; the library that will harbour the Federico García Lorca Foundation’s collection, and it will be the access point to the Centre’s general archive. And an armoured archive, suspended in the space of the library that will guard the original manuscripts of the Foundation (5,000 from the writer, 3,000 from other authors, around 50 original drawings from Salvador Dalí or Ismael de la Serna, as well as a photographic archive).
